Cole Abate "Ice"

Cole Abate was born on November 16, 2004, in Beaumont, Texas. He began Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at a young age and joined Art of Jiu-Jitsu (AOJ) in Costa Mesa, California, in 2019 to train directly under brothers Guilherme and Rafael Mendes, two of the most respected instructors in modern competitive jiu-jitsu. Under their guidance he progressed unusually quickly, and by his mid-teens he was already testing himself against adult black belts in submission-only and no-gi settings well above his own rank.

Abate's breakout moment came in 2021, when, as a 16-year-old blue belt, he won the ADCC North American East Coast Trials, becoming the youngest competitor ever to win an ADCC Trials event and beating a field that included seasoned black belt veterans. That result put him on the radar of the wider grappling world years before he would earn his own black belt, and his run of notable wins over established competitors continued through his brown belt years. He was promoted to brown belt in January 2023 at age 18, and just months later, in July 2023, he won gold in the brown belt lightweight division at the IBJJF Asian Championship in Nagoya, Japan — a performance capped by his promotion to black belt on the podium by Guilherme Mendes.

As a black belt, Abate quickly established himself as one of the featherweight division's most dangerous young competitors. He won an IBJJF gi World Championship and multiple IBJJF No-Gi World and Pan American titles, and by 2024 and 2025 he was ranked among the top competitors in the IBJJF featherweight rankings, highlighted by winning the 2025 IBJJF Crown tournament with a final-match win over João Mendes. Alongside his major titles, he has accumulated a long list of regional IBJJF Open gold medals across the United States.

In November 2024, Abate signed with ONE Championship alongside fellow young American standout Dante Leon, and he made his promotional debut at ONE Fight Night 26 in December 2024 against BJJ and MMA legend Shinya Aoki, finishing the veteran with a heel hook in the first round — a result that was recognized among the year's top submissions. The win instantly established him as one of ONE's most promising new submission grappling signings and gave him a global stage to match the reputation he had already built inside IBJJF and ADCC circles.

What separates Abate from many young prodigies is the consistency of his results across formats: IBJJF gi and no-gi titles, ADCC Trials success at an unusually young age, and an immediate, highlight-reel win in his first appearance for a major international promotion. Trained by two of the sport's most decorated instructors at AOJ and already competing for ADCC qualification into his early twenties, he represents one of the clearest bridges between the traditional IBJJF competitive pathway and the newer submission-grappling promotions reshaping the sport's visibility, and he is widely regarded as one of the top prospects in his weight class heading into the second half of the 2020s.
